How community solar works.

01 · A shared solar project
A local solar farm generates electricity for the power grid. Subscribers receive utility bill credits based on their subscription and project production; your utility continues delivering electricity.

02 · Credits on your bill
Bill-credit value depends on your utility’s Price to Compare. Credits may take one to three billing cycles to appear. Projects that are not operating cannot generate credits until energized; timing can change.

03 · Review before you enroll
Review the project’s Approved Vendor, provider, expected start date, charges, savings, and cancellation terms in the official Disclosure Form and subscription agreement before enrollment.

Understanding renewable energy credits
For Illinois Shines projects, renewable energy credits (RECs) are sold through the program and transferred to a utility or the Illinois Power Agency. A subscription does not give you ownership of those RECs or mean renewable electricity is delivered directly to your home.

How community solar works for you

Community solar lets eligible households support renewable energy and potentially reduce electricity costs without installing panels at home.

No panels on your roof

Electricity is generated at an off-site solar farm. You do not need to buy, install, or maintain rooftop panels.

Easy savings

Eligible subscribers may save on electricity costs. Savings depend on the provider, subscription terms, energy produced, and eligible bill charges; a discount may not apply to your entire electricity bill.

Get Credit on Your Bill

Solar credits are applied to your utility bill. Depending on the provider, you may also receive a separate subscription bill. Compare the credits with any subscription charges to understand your net savings.
